Ancenis castle
The castle of Ancenis is listed as historical monument. It was established in the Middle Ages by Aremberge, count bishop's wife Guérech from nantes.
Because of its strategic position, it suffered of numerous sieges during the 12th and 16th centuries.
You have to look at the entry châtelet of the castle dating from 1454 (interpretive pannels on site) and walk in the Eperon garden. Near the suspension bridge, Joachim du Bellay looks at his little village, Liré.
The castle and its ramparts were destroyed and the ditches were filled during the Mad War on the order ofAnne de Bretagne, under guardianship of her owner, Jean IV de Rieux, Lord of Ancenis.
The Renaissance entrance of the castle has an interesting defensive feature : a drawbridge precedes the harrow. This one was restored in the 60's.
The Renaissance Logis served as residence for Claude 1er de Rieux and his wife, Suzanne de Bourbon. Built on a gothic structure, the decoration of the facade dates from the first Renaissance. its restoration has just been completed.
From the 17th century, dismantled by Richelieu, the castle lost its curtains sections and its towers. The moats were filled during the construction of the docks of the Loire in the 19th century.
